Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Third MQL Jubilee Pairs Competition will be held on Wednesday 13 September and once again at Prescot Cables FC club, courtesy of the Ormskirk QL.  The format of the competition remains the same and is open to any players who took part in the 2022-23 MQL season or who will be playing in the forthcoming season.  There is no charge for entering.  Further details including how to register are available here.

The Fifth MQL Jubilee Buzzer Tournament will be held on Saturday 10 February 2024 in Hoylake.  The event will follow the usual format but we have decided that a team no longer has to represent a League or Area (for example, Liverpool or Wirral).  It could be your regular club side or even just a combination of players, although representative sides remain most welcome. 

For 8 days from Sunday 20 August, MQL teams and players have a priority registration period.  From Monday 28 August any remaining places will be offered to players and teams from beyond the Merseyside Leagues, firstly to teams who have taken part before and after that to any teams.

These Buzzer Tournaments are very popular with teams all around the country and places are usually filled very quickly.  It would be great to see lots of MQL players taking part and so please do take advantage of the priority booking period.  Further details here.

The first playing of the Don Bissett Cup since 2019 took place on Sunday 18 June at the Quiz League of London Open Quiz Festival.  Sadly MQL were unable to defend the Cup which was won by Scotland.  The MQL team of Dag Griffiths, Neil Mackaskill, Jim Eccleson, Mark Kerr and Brian Thompson, lost to Warrington (Dave Tilley, Simon Chilton, Ben Vincent and Sarah Trevarthen) but then beat a team from the Online Quiz League and then Chilterns to win the Plate.  Full results here.

Online Quiz League are running their second individual championships on Saturday 24th June.  Many players have already signed up to play at venues up and down the country.  The day involves a written individual quiz featuring 240 questions across a whole manner of subjects and then fun team quizzes in the afternoon.

The inaugural event was held in March when over 300 took part and was very successful.  This time our local venue is the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port. There are spaces left available there and it would be great to see those spaces filled with MQL players.  Registration closes on Sunday 11 June.

The 2022-23 season ended with the first Finals and Presentation Evening since 2019.  The event, held at Aigburth Peoples Hall in Liverpool, saw three finals.  Congratulations to Aigburth People who defeated Aardvarks to win the Merseyside Challenge Plate.  In a very close Mimir final, Southport & Formby's Dag Griffiths won the individual title.  This was Dag's third win and at eighty years we think that he is the oldest person to take the Trophy!  The Merseyside Challenge Cup was won by The Cricketers who beat Colly Wobblers in another well contested match in which Colly Wobbler's Pat Gibson scored a full house.  Recordings can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate final: Plate, Mimir and Cup.  The finals were followed the presentation of awards to the winners and runners up in the MCC competitions.  Images can be seen on the Gallery page.

In a short address, Chairman Danny Grimes thanked everyone who continues to support and help organise the activities of the Leagues.
