Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The World's Largest Independent Quiz Leagues

The Fifth MQL Jubilee Buzzer Tournament took place on Saturday 10 February 2024 in Hoylake. The event followed the usual format but we decided that a team no longer had to represent a League or Area (for example, Liverpool or Wirral). It could have been a regular club side or even just a combination of players, although representative sides remained most welcome.

For 8 days from Sunday 20 August, MQL teams and players had a priority registration period. From Monday 28 August any remaining places were offered to players and teams from beyond the Merseyside Leagues, firstly to teams who had taken part before and after 4 September, to any teams.

The 2024 MQL Jubilee Buzzer Tournament Details.

The event took place on Saturday 10th February at

Hoylake Parade, 31 Hoyle Road, Hoylake, Wirral CH47 3AG

· We had been allocated two additional rooms at the venue meaning that we entertained 25 teams and so introduced a Bowl competition as well as the Cup and Plate.

· Due to the increased number of teams, we decided to slightly alter our registration process which was as follows.

o Merseyside Quiz League teams no longer needed to represent a specific league, teams could enter to represent their league if they wanted or they could enter as their standard MQL team or some kind of hybrid.

o Likewise, teams from other leagues no longer needed to represent a specific league or region. Anyone was free to enter a team using whatever criteria and name they chose.

o At first, registration was open ONLY for teams consisting of players from Merseyside Quiz League.

o from 28th August Registration opened for teams who had participated in previous MQL Buzzer quizzes and registration then opened for everyone from 4th September.

o Registration was online at Buzzer Quiz - Merseyside Quiz Leagues.   Please do not register prior to registration being open for you as this will not be recorded.  You can make changes to your team line up right up until the start of the event but please do let us know any changes as early as possible.

· Entry for all teams was £70 and once your place was confirmed you were sent payment details.

· On the day teams arrived by 10am promptly with first games starting at 10:30am. The tournament finished at 7.30pm.

· There was an hour break for lunch which was ample time for players to head into Hoylake to purchase food or visit the on-site cafe.

Many congratulations to Yorkshire (Lewis Jones, Evan Lynch, Danny Lardner and Gary Moreland) who beat Misfits to win the 5th MQL Jubilee Buzzer Tournament that was held in Hoylake on Saturday 10 February.  Twenty five teams from all over the UK took part this year and were asked nearly one thousand questions. Further congratulations to M and M and M and M who beat Strongest Lincs to win the Plate and to Wirral who won the Bowl.
Thanks to our hosts at The Parade Community Centre and to the teams of writers, readers and scorers who voluntarily gave so willingly of their time and skills.  Special thanks to Tournament Organiser, Jon Stitcher and Question Coordinator and Editor, Dan Lawson for their enormous hard work in bringing the event together.  We hope that all teams enjoyed their day.  Full results are available to download here.
